Dr. Sunita Sajnani

India faces a staggering gap between the demand for organ transplants and the number of donors available. Millions of people wait — some for years — for a kidney, a liver, or a heart that could give them a second chance at life. Dr. Sunita Sajnani believes that awareness is the first step to closing that gap, and she has made organ donation advocacy a meaningful part of her community work through the Rotary Club.

At one particularly memorable event, Dr. Sunita made her message impossible to miss. She wore an illuminated dress featuring illustrations of organs — a striking visual statement — and carried two signs reading "GIFT" and "LIFE". The message was clear before she even said a word: organ donation is, quite literally, the gift of life.

Her talks at these events are direct and personal. She talks about what it means to pledge your organs — that it costs nothing, that it doesn't affect medical care in your lifetime, and that a single donor can save up to eight lives. She encourages attendees to have the conversation with their families, because a pledge only fulfils its purpose when loved ones know and support the decision.

For Dr. Sunita, this work is an extension of the same values she brings to her clinical practice: respect for life, a commitment to doing what's right, and the belief that doctors have a responsibility to lead by example in their communities.

Want to pledge as an organ donor?

You can register as an organ donor through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) at notto.mohfw.gov.in. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing — but the impact can be immeasurable.
